Vaginal Cytology
Vaginal cytology helps to conclude optimal time for breeding to enhance the chances of pregnancy. Clarksville Animal Hospital has the ability to perform vaginal cytology on female dogs. This process requires taking multiple swabs of the dog's vaginal cells and analyze them under a microscope.
Before your dog has her estrus cycle, our veterinarian will need to run additional tests, including a thyroid analysis. They can also alert us to issues that we would need to address before we start any of the breeding processes.

Caesarian Section
Most mothers can give birth without any help or complication. However, occasionally, they will need help with delivery. If a problem arises, we attempt to resolve it using medical therapy first. If medical therapy does not resolve the issue, we will perform a caesarian section or c-section on the mother.
During a c-section, we administer an anesthetic to the mother. Then our veterinarian will make an incision along her abdomen, through the uterus to retrieve unborn puppies or kittens. If you would like, we can go ahead and spay the mother during this procedure to prevent future problems like this.
